Wythe County is strategically located at the intersection of I-81 and I-77, two major interstate highways. Wytheville and Rural Retreat are the county's two incorporated towns with Wytheville serving as the county seat. The population of Wytheville is approximately 8,000, another 28,000 citizens live in the county.
